Der Koffer - Tous les Nouveaux Réalistes dans une valise (1961)

In the style of Marcel Duchamp, Spoerri produces a suitcase containing works by the Nouveaux Réalistes. This action was repeated before the suitcase was put on display at Haro Lauhus gallery in Cologne.

Daniel Spoerri's Room no 631 at the Chelsea Hotel, The Green Gallery (1965)

The American artist Allan Kaprow wrote a text on working with Spoerri for this exhibition poster of the Green Gallery in New York.

Ultima Cena - Banchetto funebre del Nouveau Réalisme (Milan, 27.10.1970)

Spoerri organizes the banquet L'Ultima Cena (the last supper) in Milan, in order to celebrate the 10th anniversary and end of the Nouveaux Réalistes. Each dish is an allusion to one of the artists in the group.

Restaurant Spoerri (Düsseldorf, 1968)

In 1968 Spoerri opens the Restaurant Spoerri in Düsseldorf. Numerous photographs document the artist friends and museum directors who visit the restaurant. The restaurant was converted into the Eat Art Gallery in 1970.

Guess who's coming to dinner

In the 1960s Daniel Spoerri's work featured interventions and performances that are less well known than his “trap paintings”.

One of Daniel Spoerri's first and most surprising performances took place at the Addie Køpcke Gallery in Copenhagen in 1961. Spoerri stamped “Attention: work of art” on food items (yeast, tinned food, flour, sugar) and sold them at cost price to visitors. Then, instead of a catalogue, he made bread from waste, labelling it “Taboo Catalogue”. All that survives of this performance are photos and a handful of objects.

Two years later, he attracted attention with his performance entitled The Suitcase. On invitation cards from an art gallery in Cologne, Spoerri printed pictures of artworks he had requested from New Realist friends. He locked all the artworks in a suitcase, and then presented them at two separate evening performances. In the same year, at the Zwirner Gallery, he presented the little known and sparsely documented performance entitled Seven Minute Exhibition Until the Egg is Hard-boiled. He took his artworks into the gallery, put them on the wall, left them there for seven minutes – “as long as it takes to hard-boil an egg”– and then put them back in their boxes.

Another remarkable performance took place in 1963 at Galerie J in Paris, which Spoerri transformed into a restaurant for ten days, organising a series of themed meals. He subsequently embarked on a series of banquet-like performances, including Hahns Abendmahl, Cologne, 1964; 29 Variations on a Meal, New York, 1964; Restaurant City Galerie, Zurich, 1965; Restaurant Spoerri, Düsseldorf, 1968; Ultima Cena, Milan, 1970; Menu travesti, Banana Trap Dinner, Edinburgh, 1970; Henkel Bankett, Hösel, 1970; Küche der Armen der Welt, Bochum, 1972; Cucina Astro Gastro - 12 Stelle, Milan, 1975; and Le déjeuner sous l'herbe, Jouy-en-Josas, 1983.
